The 2013 season will be Bubba Schweigert’s sixth season as the defensive
coordinator for the Salukis and his fifth year serving as the associate head
coach.
Schweigert features an agressive, blitzing 3-4 scheme that emphasizes
putting pressure on the offense. His 2012 defense showcased that pressure up
front as it ranked third in the Missouri Valley Football Conference in rushing
yards allowed and tied for fifth in the nation with 35 sacks. In addition, the
opportunistic defense recovered 15 fumbles, tied for 10th most in the nation.
Defensive end Ken Boatright was named an AFCA All-American and a third-
team AP All-American in 2012.
Schweigert’s 2011 defense ranked third in the Missouri Valley Football
Conference in total yardage, interceptions and sacks. Perhaps his most
remarkable coaching effort took place in 2010, when four starters in the
secondary were lost to season-ending injuries, and a total of 50 games were
lost by players on the two-deep. Nevertheless, his unit still led the Missouri
Valley Football Conference in total defense, yielding an average of 332.1
yards per game.
His 2009 defense ranked second nationally with 23 interceptions, and the
Salukis tied for fourth nationally with 33 forced turnovers. That year, his group
also ranked eighth nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 15.92 points
per game and led the MVFC with 36 sacks. In 2008, SIU was tied for 12th
nationally in forced turnovers (29) and in five seasons his teams have forced
an average of 2.2 turnovers per game (127 total).
In his five seasons at SIU, Schweigert has coached four first team All-
Americans and 19 All-Conference selections (nine first team, six second team,
four honorable mention). Cornerback Korey Lindsey garnered All-American
accolades in each of his three seasons under Schweigert, was drafted by the
Cincinnati Bengals and is currently a member of the New Orleans Saints.
Prior to SIU, Schweigert compiled a 22-21 record as head coach at
Division II Minnesota Duluth (2004-07). He was named the North Central
Conference Coach of the Year in 2005 after directing UMD to an 8-4 record,
defeating three American Football Coaches Association top 20 teams along
the way. His team won a share of the school’s first NCC title and its second
NCAA Division II playoff berth in four years. Schweigert was also named the
D2football.com Northwest Region Coach of the Year and the AFCA Division
II Coach of the Year for Region 5.
Prior to UMD, Schweigert spent 15 seasons at the University of North
Dakota where he helped guide the Fighting Sioux to six NCC titles, eight
playoff appearances and a Division II National Championship in 2001. He
was Dale Lennon’s defensive coordinator from 1999-2003. Schweigert was
named the AFCA DII Assistant Coach of the Year in 2000.
Before joining North Dakota, Schweigert was the defensive coordinator at
his alma mater, Jamestown College (N.D.), from 1985-88. He also served as
admissions counselor and head baseball coach. Schweigert has a bachelor’s
degree in business administration from Jamestown College and a master’s
degree from North Dakota. In 2002, he was honored with Jamestown
College’s Rollie Greeno Award for Outstanding Commitment in the field of
education and coaching. Schweigert and his wife, Laura, have two sons, A.J.
(10) and Cooper (8).
The 2013 season is Kalen DeBoer’s fourth season as the offensive
coordinator at SIU and his 15th year as a college coach. He also serves as
the position coach for the wide receivers. DeBoer was hired following the
2010 season after compiling a 67-3 (.957) record during five seasons as
head coach at the University of Sioux Falls. He guided USF to three National
Championships and was a three-time NAIA National Coach of the Year. In his
first season in Carbondale, the Saluki offense averaged 30.1 points and 378.2
yards of total offense per game behind a balanced attack. SIU ran for 189.5
yards per game and threw for 188.7 in the first year in DeBoer’s system.
DeBoer’s offense set a Saluki Stadium record with 565 yards of total
offense in its game against Southeast Missouri State in 2012. That eclipsed the
previous record, which was set by DeBoer’s offense in 2010 when the Salukis
put up 508 yards of total offense against Indiana State in the final game of
the season. In 2011, the Salukis finished third in the MVFC in total offense,
averaging 377.8 yards per game. Jewel Hampton rushed for 1,121 yards -- the
second tailback at SIU to surpass the 1,000-yard plateau (Deji Karim did it in
2009) in DeBoer’s offense. The 2010 offense recorded five games with more
than 400 yards of total offense and had 34 plays that went for 20 yards or
longer (eight rush, 26 pass) on the year.
Prior to joining the Saluki coaching staff, DeBoer led one of the most
dominant programs in the nation. In his five years as the head coach at
Sioux Falls (2005-09), DeBoer won four Great Plains Athletic Conference
Championships, 50-straight home games and 29-straight games overall over
his last two seasons. That winning streak was the longest in the nation at
any level in college football at the time. His teams won back-to-back NAIA
National Championships in 2008 and 2009, and adding in his 2006 national
championship, DeBoer won as many National Championships as games he
lost during his five-year tenure as USF’s head coach.
DeBoer coached two NAIA National Players of the Year in quarterbacks
Lorenzo Brown (2009) and Chad Cavender (2007). A graduate of USF, DeBoer
played for the Cougars from 1993-96, where he was an All-American wide
receiver. He set school records for receptions (234), receiving yards (3,400)
and touchdown catches (33). Following his playing days, he became a student
assistant for Sioux Falls under coach Bob Young in 1997. From 2000-04, he
served as USF’s offensive coordinator and succeeded Young as head coach in
2005. At the age of 32, he led Sioux Falls to the 2006 National Championship.
He and his wife, Nicole, have two daughters, Alexis and Avery.

The 2013 season will be Austin Flyger’s fourth year at Southern Illinois
and his seventh year coaching college football. In 2012 he returned to SIU
as the defensive line coach, where he had served as a graduate assistant and
defensive line coach for two seasons (2008-09).
The veteran defensive line was one of the strengths of the 2012 team
and featured an AFCA All-American in defensive end Ken Boatright. SIU’s
three starting defensive linemen, Boatright, Eze Obiora and Kayon Swanson
combined for 15.5 sacks on the season. Obiora had 8.0 of those sacks, which
tied for second in the MVFC and 18th in the nation. The line helped SIU rank
third in the conference in rushing yards allowed in 2012.
During both seasons of Flyger’s previous tenure, SIU’s defensive line was a
key component of the team’s championship defenses, led by All-Conference
nose tackle Chris Arthurs. The defense held opponents to 10 or fewer points
in seven games in 2008 and 2009, as the Salukis posted a combined 20-5
record, including a 15-1 mark in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
After the 2009 season, Flyger took a full-time position as the defensive
