Ray Dorr
1984-87
Record: 17-27
Dorr had the difficult task
of succeeding Dempsey.
His 1986 team was a
pleasant surprise as it was
perfect against Ohio Valley
teams. A one-point loss at
Kansas, after taking a late
lead, will be remembered as
one of the toughest defeats
in school history. His teams
were 3-1 against both Eastern
Illinois and Illinois State. Dorr
left SIU to become offensive
coordinator at USC. He died
in 2001 of Lou Gehrig’s
Disease.
Rick Rhoades
1988
Record: 4-7
Although credited with
upgrading the program, the
genial Rhoades resigned just
two months after his first
season ended.
He returned “home” to
Alabama where he joined
the Crimson Tide’s staff. He
later became an assistant
at Kentucky, and in 1993
was named head coach at
McNeese State.
Bob Smith
1989-93
Record: 17-38
In five seasons at SIU,
Smith’s teams and players
e s t a b l i s h e d n ume r o u s
offensive records.
One of themost remarkable
accomplishments of his five-
year tenure came in 1991
when the Salukis managed to
post a 7-4 record by winning
the first five games of the
season, rising as high as
No. 15 in the national polls.
The 1991 team was adept at
winning close games, as six
of its seven wins came by
a total of just 14 points. The
club won three games by a
single point.
Shawn Watson
1994-96
Record: 11-22
Watson took over at SIU
after putting in impressive
seasons as an assistant at
Miami (Ohio). His first team
avoided a winless season
when i t up s e t a good
Western Kentucky club, 10-
7. Following the 1-10 start,
his teams recorded back-to-
back 5-6 seasons in 1995 and
1996. His final club in 1996
got off to a 4-1 start before a
five-game losing streak and
5-6 overall finish. Left SIU to
become quarterbacks coach
at Northwestern.
Jan Quarless
1997-2000
Record: 14-30
Quarless became SIU’s
18th head coach in January
1997. He had previously
served as an assistant with the
Salukis from 1977 through
1982 under Rey Dempsey.
Although his first teamwas
3-8, his 1999 club went 5-6
and set a new SIU scoring
record.
Jerry Kill
2001-07
Record: 55-32
In seven years at the helm
of SIU, Kill guided the Salukis
to three-straight Gateway
Conference championships
and f ive-st raight playof f
appearances.
In 2004, the Salukis spent
10 weeks atop the FCS polls,
and Ki l l won the Eddie
Robinson Award for Coach
of the Year in FCS.
Kill left SIU after the 2007
season to become head
coach at Northern Illinois and
is currently the head coach at
Minnesota.
Dale Lennon
2008-Present
Record: 35-23
Dale Lennon was named
the 20th head coach in school
history on Dec. 28, 2007. He
guided SIU to back-to-back
MVFC Championships and
FCS Playoff appearances in
2008 and 2009. In 2009,
Lennon led the Salukis to the
No. 1 national ranking for the
first time since Oct. 10, 2005.
The Sports Network had SIU
ranked as the No. 1 team for
the last three weeks of the
regular season.
Lennon was named the
AFCA Region IV Coach of
the Year as well as the MVFC
Bruce Craddock Coach of
the Year in both 2008 and
2009. He joined six previous
league coaches to be named
the conference’s coach of the
year in back-to-back seasons.
SIU won 11-straight games
in 2009 and finished with
an 11-2 record. He is one of
just three Saluki coaches to
lead the Dawgs to a 10-win
season. He has 35 wins, more
than any other coach in his
first three seasons at SIU.
