Retired Jerseys
#23 Harry Bobbitt (1961-63)
Carbondale native Harry Bobbitt
died of a blood clot in July 1964,
the year prior to what would
have been his senior season. His
number was retired after that year.
One of three team captains of the
1963 team, Bobbitt caught a then
program record 34 passes for 503
yards and five touchdowns.
#30 Mark Hemphill (1979)
Mark Hemphill was a football-
track letterman, who had suffered a
severe spinal injury during the 1979
football season. On Sept. 13, 1980,
Southern Illinois University honored
him with “Mark Hemphill Day” at
McAndrew Stadium. A McAndrew
Stadium all-time record crowd of
17,150 showed up to watch SIU beat
Eastern Illinois 37-35 on that special
day. More than $30,000 dollars was
raised in contributions and given to
Mark’s family to help in covering his
various rehabiliation expenses. Illinois Governor Jim Thompson was
on hand to present Mark with a plaque at halftime during which time
his football jersey was retired. Mark died a year later in St. Louis, his
hometown.
#78 Jim Lovin (1946-49)
Jim Lovin, a Benton, Ill. native
who is shown on the left in the
picture, was the first Southern
Illinois football player to have
his jersey number retired. Not
only was Lovin the first player
in SIU’s history to start every
game throughout his four-year
career, but he was the first
Illinois Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference player to be named
first team All-Conference four
times. The tackle was SIU’s team
MVP in 1948 and 1949. In the
1949 season finale, a 41-14 win over Indiana State at McAndrew
Stadium, Lovin was rewarded with an opportunity to kick a PAT, which
he made.
