Since joining the Division I ranks in
1966, Southern Illinois University has
been one of the more successful and
most frequent participants in the NCAA
postseason tournament.
The Salukis have made five trips to
the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
The 1968 team, coached by Joe Lutz,
and the 1971 team, coached by Richard
“Itch” Jones, both finished as national
runners-up. SIU lost both those series to
Southern California.
Jones led SIU to the CWS three
times in six years. He had the Salukis
back in the CWS in 1974 and again in
1977 with each team finishing in third
place.
SIU is tied for 22nd place among the
top 25 teams that have participated in
the past NCAA Tournaments. The Salukis
made their 14th NCAA appearance in
1990.
The Salukis hold one district cham-
pionship team record and one individual
CWS record. SIU hit nine home runs
in a 15-6 victory over Ball State in
the 1969 District 4 playoffs. Individu-
ally, Craig Robinson is tied for eighth
for most doubles in a CWS. Robinson
had four in five games during the 1977
series.
The current structure of the national
collegiate Division I Baseball Champion-
ship provides for a field of 64 teams. The
Missouri Valley Conference is one of the
29 conferences with an automatic bid.
Winners of the 16 regional tournaments
advance to eight super-regional tourna-
ments. The eight winners of the super-
regionals qualify for the College World
Series in Omaha, Neb.
The 2013 season will mark the 65th
year the College World Series has been
played in Omaha, Neb. It was played at
Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium from 1948-
2010, and in 2011 it moved to the newly
constructed TD Ameritrade Park. The
first College World Series ever played
was in Kalamazoo, Mich., in 1947.
