Carbondale native Harry Bobbitt died of a blood clot in July John Field, DB

#78 Jim Lovin (1946-49)
Jim Lovin, a Benton, Ill. native who is shown on the left in 
the picture, was the  rst Southern Illinois football player to 
have his jersey number retired. Not only was Lovin the  rst 
player in SIU’s history to start every game throughout his 
four-year career, but he was the  rst Illinois Intercollegiate 

Athletic Conference player to be named  rst team All- 
Conference four times. The tackle was SIU’s team MVP in 
1948 and 1949. In the 1949 season  nale, a 41-14 win over 
Indiana State at McAndrew Stadium, Lovin was rewarded 
with an opportunity to kick a PAT, which he made.
