1977 SWEET 16

Ten years after winning the NIT in New York City, the Salukis earned their first crack at the

University Division’s “Big Dance” in 1977. In the school’s first-ever NCAA Tournament

appearance, a veteran-laden squad led by Mike Glenn, advanced to the Sweet 16 by

beating Arizona. Glenn, a future NBA star, averaged 21 points per game on the season,

while shooting .582 percent from the floor. He was spectacular in SIU’s two NCAA games.

Glenn did not leave the court, playing all 80 minutes, making 30-of-45 field goal attempts

and collecting 65 points. The tournament featured 32 teams and was the final NCAA

Tournament in which teams were not seeded.
