SIU’s Record at Davies
A
longtime staple of Southern Illinois University Athletics, Davies
Gym has been the home of Saluki Volleyball since the program’s
inception.
Originally known as simply the Men’s Gymnasium, Davis Gym has
been a part of Saluki Athletics for more than 85 years. Built in 1925 with
a $170,000 price tag, the gymnasium served as the home of SIU’s men’s
and women’s indoor sports programs until the men moved into SIU Arena
in 1964.
Longtime chairman of the SIUC physical education department for
women, Dorothy Davies, retired in 1974, and since then the facility has
been known as Davies Gym.
With the growing success of the women’s program in the 1970s and
early ‘80s, renovation of the gym was undertaken and completed in 1982
thanks to a $3.35 million allocation by then-governor Jim Thompson that
increased the capacity of the facility to 1,250.
Since the Saluki women’s basketball team’s move to SIU Arena during
the 1987-88 season, volleyball remains the only varsity sport housed in
Davies.
Davies Gym underwent more major upgrades during the 2012-13
season, including a complete overhaul of the Salukis’ locker room and a
repainting and refinishing of the playing surface to help make it a first class
volleyball facility.
Over the years, Davies has provided a hostile environment for opposing
teams, thanks to the raucous noise provided by the “Davies Crazies.” In the
past six seasons alone, Davies has hosted seven of its top 10 single-game
volleyball attendances.
2012 was a banner year at Davies as Southern posted three of the
top 10 attendances in program history, including a crowd of 732 in an
upset win over eventual MVC Champion Creighton.
The 2012 squad’s seven conference wins at Davies tied a program
record matched by both the 1995 and 1998 squads. The 1995 and 1998
teams also set facility records with 12 overall wins at Davies.
