Stephen Arvanis is in this third year as volunteer assis-
tant coach for the cross country and track programs. As
a Saluki, Arvanis was a two-time MVC Champion in the
800 meter run and an eight-time All-MVC performer. His
indoor 800m time of 1:50.07 ranks 3rd on the all-time
SIU list.
In his time as a volunteer assistant, Arvanis has assisted
in all aspects of the distance program, including the
MVC men’s cross country championship in 2012. In
2013, he became a USATF Level I certified track coach.
2011-12:
All-MVC in the indoor 800m with his sec-
ond place finish...Competed in five events in 12 meets
in both the indoor and outdoor seasons combined...
Notched two wins across both the indoor and outdoor
seasons, one in the indoor mile at the Saluki Fast Start
and the other in the outdoor 800m at the Illinois State
Dual Meet...Finished in the top-ten in at the MVC Out-
door Championships in the 800m.
2010-11:
Named All-MVC Honoree in the 800m...
Notched a first place finish at the MVC Outdoor Cham-
pionships in the 800m...Recorded a first place finish at
the Ole Miss Invitational in the 800m with a season best
time of 1:52.86.
2009-10:
Named All-Missouri Valley Conference in both
the 800m and the 4x400 relay for the second consecu-
tive season...Captured the 800m title at both the MVC In-
door and Outdoor Championships...Earned MVC Schol-
ar-Athlete of the Week honors on Dec. 10, 2009...Won
the 800m races at the Gladstein Invitational (Jan. 23) and
Ole Miss Invitational (April 10)...Set a new personal-best
800m time of 1:51.80 at the Gladstein Invitational.
2008-2009:
Was an all-MVC performer in the 800m and
4x400 relay...Finished third in the 800m in the MVC
Outdoor Championships with a outdoor personal-best
time of 1:52.23...Part of 4x400 relay team that notched
a second-place finish at the outdoor championships...
Led team during indoor season in the 800m running a
personal-best of 1:51.90 at the Rod McCravy Invitational
that was the ninth fastest in Saluki history...Won the
800m at the SASF Invitational.
2007-2008:
Best finish was in the Saluki Fast Start, where
he placed third in the 800m run with a time of 1:55.68...
Redshirted during the outdoor track season.
High School:
Finished third at state in the 800m his se-
nior year...Member of the Elite All-State team as a junior
and a senior...Three-time conference champion in the
800m...Anchored his school’s third-place 4x800 team
at the state meet as a junior...Set school records in the
4x800 relay and 800m run as a sophomore...Won indoor
800m state title as a senior...Named Iowa’s Most Out-
standing Performer at the senior All-Star meet.
Personal:
Graduated from Southern Illinois in 2012 with
a B.S. in Mathematics...Currently working on Teacher’s
Certification and Master’s in Secondary Education while
substitute teaching in the area...Born April 1, 1989...Son
of Todd and Amy Arvanis...Resides in Carbondale with
his wife, Alli.
