NCAA Tournament
The 1985-86 Salukis became the first team in the
history of the Gateway Conference to go undefeated
in league play, taking Southern’s first conference title.
Southern topped preseason favorite Drake twice by
two-point margins in order to secure the undefeated
Gateway slate. The Salukis enjoyed a 23-game
winning streak through the end of the regular season,
securing the program’s first-ever national ranking and
first NCAA Tournament bid. Southern ranked as high as
15th nationally during the season. SIU lost to Auburn
61-39 in the second round of the 1986 NCAA Tourna-
ment. First-Team All-Gateway Conference honoree
Petra Jackson led the Salukis with an average of 16.8
points and 7.2 rebounds per game while Second-Team
All-Conference nominee Bridgett Bonds averaged 13.6
points and 7.4 rebounds per game.

NCAA Tournament—Sweet 16
The 1986-87 Salukis completed a feat that has not
since been equaled by going undefeated in Gateway
Conference play for the second consecutive season. SIU
won 18 consecutive games at one point and achieved
its highest-ever program ranking at No. 13. The
Salukis won their first Gateway Conference Tournament
championship by defeating Eastern Illinois 53-51 in the
championship game. Southern recorded the program’s
first-ever NCAA Tournament win with a 70-56 win
over LSU before falling to Louisiana Tech 66-53 in the
Sweet 16. First-Team All-Gateway selection Ann Kattreh
led the Salukis with an average of 15.2 points per
game while Gateway MVP Bridgett Bonds added 14.2
points and 8.1 rebounds per game and honorable
mention Mary Berghuis averaged 11.7 points and 7.1
boards per game. Cindy Scott was named Gateway
Coach of the Year.
