SOUTHERN ILLINOIS
A
fter a record setting 2012-13
campaign, the Southern Illinois
women’s tennis team is setting its goals
even higher this year.
The Salukis finished with a 19-5 (.739)
record after starting the season winning
9-of-10 matches. Its 19-5 record was
good enough for the highest winning
percentage in school
history after setting the
record just a season before
in 2011-12.
SIU entered the
Intercollegiate Tennis
Association’s national
ranks for the first time in school history at
No. 59. SIU’s Jennifer Dien and Anastacia
Simons received an ITA national doubles
ranking of 36, the first time a Saluki pair
has been in the national ranks.
Southern was a mere one-game away from
the NCAA National Championships after
falling to Wichita State in the finals of the
Missouri Valley Conference tournament.
The Salukis return five players from the
2012-13 campaign including seniors Anita
Lee and Korey Love. They combined for
a 25-12 (.675) singles record last season.
Love and Lee will be expected to take on a
leadership role this year.
Southern also return twins, Gisela and
Ariadna Cairo Baza who combined for a
32-12 (.727) record in singles action while
going 6-2 record in the MVC.
SIU adds three newcomers
to the roster this
fall, including Polina
Dozortseva, Lauren
Hoekstra and Meagan
Monaghan.
“We have freshmen who are
making an impact on the
team right away,” said head coach Audra
Anderson. “This team has weapons, and
I’m excited for the year. This is a fun group
to work with.”
“We’ve loaded up our schedule with some
good teams that will get us prepared for
the top teams in our conference,” said
Anderson.
In addition to the MVC schedule, SIU
will face programs such as Saint Louis,
Arkansas and Arkansas State.
“I expect us to be just
as strong as a team as
last year’s 19-5 team,
if not a deeper team.”
